4.5 Supportive treatment1,2,3

Relief of symptoms and adverse reactions is an important part of treating kidney cancer. Supportive care for patients with mRCC covers a wide range of measures/offers for patients and relatives, including:

  1. Management of treatment-related adverse reactions (see section on toxicity management)
  2. Management of sequelae of the disease and treatment (fluid therapy/blood transfusion/treatment ofĀ hypercalcaemia)
  3. Pain management (palliative radiotherapyĀ and/or pain medication)
  4. Follow-up conversations with the patient/caregiver during the course of the disease with doctor and nurse
  5. Close cooperation with the patient’s GP
  6. Support from an outgoing palliative team for complex palliative issues, including pronounced fatigue, nutritional problems, pain, mental challenges, dyspnoea, etc.)
  7. Information about the importance of self-care incl. smoking cessation, exercise, food intake, etc.
  8. Network involvement incl. family and friends
  9. Reference to municipal services incl. exercise, home help, etc.
  10. Information on services via the Danish Cancer Society for patients and relatives, incl. psychological support
  11. Information about patient association (DANYCA) and patient schools
