Relief of symptoms and adverse reactions is an important part of treating kidney cancer. Supportive care for patients with mRCC covers a wide range of measures/offers for patients and relatives, including:
- Management of treatment-related adverse reactions (see section on toxicity management)
- Management of sequelae of the disease and treatment (fluid therapy/blood transfusion/treatment ofĀ hypercalcaemia)
- Pain management (palliative radiotherapyĀ and/or pain medication)
- Follow-up conversations with the patient/caregiver during the course of the disease with doctor and nurse
- Close cooperation with the patientās GP
- Support from an outgoing palliative team for complex palliative issues, including pronounced fatigue, nutritional problems, pain, mental challenges, dyspnoea, etc.)
- Information about the importance of self-care incl. smoking cessation, exercise, food intake, etc.
- Network involvement incl. family and friends
- Reference to municipal services incl. exercise, home help, etc.
- Information on services via the Danish Cancer Society for patients and relatives, incl. psychological support
- Information about patient association (DANYCA) and patient schools
